Hex long nut

A hex long nut, also known as a union nut, is a fastener among other things that is fully threaded and designed to join two external threads, most commonly a threaded rod. There is usually a hex on the outside of the fastener so that the wrench can grip it freely. These nuts are found to be used to form long rod assemblies from shorter rods. The rods are also threaded together with coupling nuts only within a certain distance.

Used to observe engagement and thread nuts with left hand. These are used to build up long rod assemblies from shorter length rods. The rod is threaded a certain distance into the coupling nut. Coupling nut dimensions are described by the Industrial Fastener Institute as standard IFI-128. It’s an easy finish. Depending on the bar stock used, it can be cold drawn or hot rolled. There are two different thread sizes and profiles threaded union nuts known as reducer union nuts.

Coupling nuts find application in either tightening rod assemblies inward or compressing rod assemblies outward. Coupling nuts are one of the frequently used nuts for making bearings at home and for sealing tie rods or presses at home. The main advantage of coupling nuts in this application compared to standard nuts is that, in terms of their length, there are more threads that can be observed to engage with the bolt. This is what allows you to spread the force over more threads, which is responsible for reducing the likelihood of stripping or galling threads due to the impact of heavy loads.
